Commercial Pilot Licence in India – Eligibility, Fees & Career Scope (2026).

 

A Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) allows you to fly aircraft professionally and earn a salary. In India, the licence is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). With airlines expanding fleets and routes, pilot demand is expected to stay strong over the coming years.

Eligibility

To apply for a CPL, you must be 18 years old at the time of licence issue (training can start at 17). You need 10+2 with Physics and Maths, and at least 50 per cent marks. Arts and Commerce students can now qualify by completing Physics and Maths through NIOS. A valid DGCA Class 1 medical and ICAO English Level 4 proficiency are mandatory.

Training

CPL training usually takes 8 to 18 months. It includes ground school for theory subjects, 200 flying hours, DGCA exams, and a final skill test with an examiner.

Fees

The total cost of CPL training in India ranges between ₹35 and ₹55 lakhs, including flying hours, ground school, exams, and materials. Education loans and airline cadet programs help many students manage this cost.

Career Scope

Most CPL holders start as airline First Officers and later upgrade to Captain. Entry-level salaries range from ₹18 to ₹36 lakhs per year, while experienced captains can earn ₹50 lakhs to ₹1 crore or more.
